Today I get to meet up with one of my old addiction clients whose life has worked out just as you would like. They are back with their old self, making their way in the world and living without their drug of choice or any other come to that.
The key to life beyond addiction is not a life focussed on a substance but one built on what is missing, the simple things, things that many of us take for granted.
Family, friends, real friends who tell you what you need to hear even if you find it difficult to hear and also a life that rests on feeling fulfilled.
Recovery form addiction is often hard but meeting up with an old client who has since become a valuable friend and great inspiration has reminded me of the talent that lies within the clients who appear to have no other dimensions other than the one that is the most overt –the addict which they have to deal with daily.
The journey to recovery is often hampered by lots of pit stops but the finishing line, the total recovery is worth all the pain and effort as you will be rewarded with an incredible person, loving, wise, inspirational and with a zest for life that many envy.
If you are dealing with addiction, either personally or if it is someone that your care about. Remember the words of Churchill, “If you are going through Hell, keep going.” The rewards are so worth it.
